At Goku's insistence, Gohan leaves with the mortally injured Piccolo, and flies off towards the spaceship. A hand-to-hand fight ensues between the two superpowers, with Goku leaving Freeza at a total loss. As a demonstration of his newfound power, Goku allows himself to be hit by one of Freeza's fingertip blasts, and is completely unscathed.

This is one of those episodes that just feels really good. Freeza has been beating on Goku mercilessly for episode after episode, and Goku's only real success so far has been to throw a gigantic blue ball at him. But now... he actually manages to take Freeza on successfully in hand to hand combat. Ah. That feels good.

One other thing I found very interesting about this one (and the very end of the last one) is that it is the only time in the series, ever, where we actually see Goku exercising parental authority. I mean he really YELLS at Gohan. Why I think that's important, I don't know. But I just find it really funny how laid back Goku is, and how he often seems more childish than his children. Well, Goten is a damned nutbar, but you know what I mean.

Goku (in the previous episode): "This is the last time I'm going to tell you! Get out of here right now!"
Goku (in the recap): "Just do as I say, Gohan... leave me now... can't you see I need to be alone?"

Not bad dialogue... but it's stupid because the line CHANGES between the episode itself and the recap. How did that happen?

Goku: "Piccolo is our only chance of bringing the others back to this dimension"

No comment necessary.

Dr. Briefs: "Could this be it, Scratch?"

"THE CAT" DOES NOT HAVE A NAME. IT IS "THE CAT." NOW THEY HAVE TRIED TO NAME "THE CAT." AND THE NAME IS REALLY, REALLY STUPID. Sorry, but I love The Cat. And The Cat should not have a name.

Kame Sennin: "God bless him... all we can do is pray"

I am tempted at this point to use an emoticon for the very first time in an episode comparison. I'm not really planning on doing so, but if I did, it would be this one: 0_0. It's not so much that the line sounds very, very wrong and out of place, but I can't believe FUNimation would let Kame Sennin get away with something like this.

Freeza: "The jury's still out on that one!"

Jury. Yeah.

What is Dr. Briefs always doing in the Japanese version? ALWAYS?
